On the terminology of the“pottery eagle tripod”of the Yangshao culture and its related questions

Abstract:The pottery eagle tripod, also known as the pottery tripod in the shape of an eagle, of the Yangshao culture in the collection of the Chinese National Museum was named mainly according to its tripod-like form. The authors, by investigating into its cultural background and function, argue that the tripod tradition was nonexistent either in the daily life or mortuary customs of western Henan or central Shaanxi. Therefore, the so called eagle tripod at Quanhu village should have been a pottery zun for alcohol storage, which functioned as a religious facility in special events. It should be regarded as a pottery eagle zun or a pottery zun in the shape of an eagle. In the middle Yangshao period, western Henan and central Shaanxi pioneered in social complexity, while religious activities were turned into ruling practices. The eagle zun and other special artifacts were regarded as a status or power symbol.

On Wangzujiang and the Fang state of the Western Zhou Dynasty

Abstract:In the Western Zhou bronze inscriptions, there is Wang Zu Jiang, who was regarded as the queen of King Mu of the Western Zhou Dynasty. However, no agreement has been achieved in terms of the meaning of the character . The character   should be identified Zu(俎), and Zu Jiang(俎姜)namely Fang Jiang(房姜), who was from the Fang state of the surname Jiang. The Fang state was located by the Ju River, approximately ranging from Baokang County to Dangyang city in Hubei Province. The discussion of Wang Zu Jiang and State Fang contributes greatly to the study of the geography and history of the Western Zhou.

A preliminary study of the Jinshifei tripod of the Jin state

Abstract:The Jingshifei tripod of the Jin state, a first-class national cultural relic, was recovered by the Xinjiang County Public Security Bureau in 2019, which was handed over to the Shanxi Bronze Museum afterwards. The tripod dated to the early phase of the early Spring and Autumn Period, and its donor should be“Jingshifei.”The inscription mainly recorded that Jingshifei of the Jin state made a bronze tripod and passed it down to her descendant“Yongbao.”The“jingshi”in Jingshifei may be of the same family with the "Jingren" in Wusiwei tripod and the“Jingkao”in Sanshi basin. Jingshi and Chu should have a tight relationship. They could be Chu people who adopted the surname of their old haunt but ended up living in Zongzhou and the Jin state by chance.

On the musical instrument pattern on the motif stones of the Han Dynasty

Abstract:A transformation in musical instruments took place in the Han Dynasty, which paved the foundation of our national music. In terms of frequency, qin, se, flute di, sheng, and drums gradually replaced the previous bells in a large volume. Exotic musical instruments were introduced from abroad and fused with the local ones in China. On basis of transmission, innovation and introduction, the Han-Dynasty music became more diverse.

A reinvestigation of the astrology mirror in Henan Provincial Museum

Abstract:The astrology bronze mirror in the collection of the Henan Provincial Museum bears patterns and inscriptions of evident Taoist features, which makes important material evidence of Taoism in the Songshan area. The author, based on the mirror itself and its historical background, argues that the mirror should have been a divine facility of the Shangqing or Zhengyi Taoist school of the Tang Dynasty. It reflects religious activities of the two Taoist schools, as well as their interaction and fusion. The mirror records the development and transformation of the Tang-Dynasty Taoism.

The purple clay ware research in an archaeological perspective

Abstract:Zisha(Purple clay)ware is a famous kind of ancient ceramics, which has long been cherished by ancient Chinese literati, and has become a“plaything”rich in humanistic connotation. For more than half a century, archaeological work has introduced a new vision to the study of Zisha wares. This paper reviews the archaeological discoveries of Zisha wares in kiln sites, tombs, city sites, shipwrecks and other sites since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and focuses on the analysis of the role played by archaeological methods and data in advancing the research of Zisha dating, varieties, crafts, arts, marketing scope and other aspects. However, at present, in the work of ceramic archaeology, both the emphasis of data and the research concept of “operation chain” are slightly insufficient, which still needs to be further carried out in archaeological work.

On the Long kingdom of the Shang Dynasty and its related question

Abstract:Our ancestors, based on observation of animals, created the concept of dragon with divine features. The authors synthesize the related records in the oracle inscriptions and conclude that dragon could be used in the contexts of human names, state names and divinities. The dragon state was active mainly in the reign of Wuding. This article explores the related historical activities of the dragon state and its correlation with the Yinxu royal family.

On the Dahan burial mound at Mengjing and its correlation with
Emperor Guangwu of the Eastern Han Dynasty

The burial, with a slope and constructed by bricks and stones, made the highest rank of the Eastern-Han Dynasty. The scale of the burial mound is accord with historical documents. The burial dated to early Eastern Han period. The mausoleum is extensive in scale, with important text evidence unearthed in its adjacent area. The correlation between the mausoleum and the important routes correlates with historical documents. The mausoleum should have been the Yuan mausoleum, the tomb occupant of which should be the first emperor of the Eastern Han Dynasty.
