Zhang Ronghua, 89, and his grandson Zhang Guoqing are the only inheritors of traditional oil-paper umbrella making in Xiangyang village. Xiangyang village has an over 400-year history of making handcrafted oiled paper umbrellas with bamboo stands. Made of oiled paper and bamboo frame, oil-paper umbrella is a traditional Chinese handicraft. The craftsmanship includes more than 80 procedures of sophisticated techniques. Other than its utility, oil-paper umbrella is also indispensable in local traditional weddings.
