The Han dynasty witnessed a great and prosperous period in ancient China from 202 BC to 220 CE. And the Western and Eastern Han saw the development of feudal society and created an effulgent art and culture in their over 400 years, social production and life showed flourishing vitality and booming spirit of the times.

The Han dynasty stone portraits, broad and profound, bold and mysterious, are well presented the Han art. And they won high praises from some modern litterateurs including Lu Xun and Lin Fengmian. The custom of elaborate funeral was popular during the Han dynasty, and sarcophagus (stone coffins) with portraits are one of expressional forms of elaborate funeral. Portrait subjects, among which immortal and celestial being are always enduring, directly manifest the spiritual pursuit of tomb masters.
