"Abundant harvest of all food crops, and the domestic animals and fowls are all thriving" is a sort of blessing in China, which describes a rich harvest of grains. According to the plant archaeological findings, there mainly six kinds of crops cultivated in ancient China before Han dynasty, namely rice, millet, soybean, wheat, as well as the industrial crop - hemp. These crops are consistent with the historical documents both in quantity and category.

Crops planting is the material basis of the development of civilization. What does the"five cereals" cover? Does it refer to five specific grains or "five"is a function word which means "many"? How can the rotten plant be the important evidence of archaeology? And why the hemp was included in the"five cereals" by ancient plant documents? Professor Zhao will try to find these answers in his lecture on this Saturday, and if you are interested, please come and join it!
