The excavation of the Tumen site of the Neolithic Age in Yichun, Henan

Abstract:The Luoyang Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology conducted an archaeological excavation at the Tumen Site in Yichuan from 2017 to 2019. A large number of Neolithic discoveries were uncovered. Pit H24 and pit H25, dating from the middle and late Yangshao period to the early Longshan period, were both important. Though more excavations are in need to fully uncover the site, the current field work has deepened our understanding of the Tumen site, which is of great significance to further investigations of prehistoric settlements and civilization in the Yi River Basin.

Research on "the Jade Artifacts of the Western China Archetype" from the prehistoric time to the Xia period (part III)

Abstract:This long article is divided into three parts, and this is the third one. The first part reviews the formation and research process of the author's viewpoint on“Western China Archetype of Jade Artifacts” during the past 40 years. It also introduces five typical Western China jade materials, which can be identified from their styles. The author also summarizes unearthed jade artifacts of the Yangshao period. The second part synthesizes the jade culture from the pre-Qijia period to the Qijia period in the upper and middle reaches of the Yellow River. In the third part, the author draws a comprehensive analysis of the jade-culture development from the prehistoric time to the Xia period in the Shanxi-Shaanxi Plateau and the Sichuan Plain. The Shanxi-Shaanxi Plateau is located at the place where the jade culture exchanged between West and East China. The original mines of the third and fifth types of typical West China jade materials might be located in Shaanxi. From 2100 BC to 2000 BC, population of the Shandong area moved westward presumably due to natural disasters or some other reasons. Thereafter, the Shimao and Lushanmao people in northern Shaanxi may have learned from them and developed the craftsmanship tradition of yazhang and edged tools inscribed with ancestral spirit-patterns. The special traditions of making and using yazhang blade and collared disk may have spread from northern Shaanxi along the“crescent-shaped area”to the plains of western Sichuan. This observation is worthy of in-depth explorations.

On the production and circulation of turquoise ornaments of the Erlitou period

Abstract:In the past, scholars paid great attention to the distribution of turquoise inlaid ornaments with authoritative symbols, such as bronze plaques and dragon-shaped utensils in the Erlitou culture. However, research on the turquoise tube-bead ornaments, though distributed in a wider area, was comparatively insufficient. This article first investigates the morphological and technical characteristics of tube beads in the Erlitou turquoise workshop. Thereafter, the author discusses turquoise tube-bead ornaments unearthed from other sites in the same period, and their correlations with the workshops at the Erlitou site. On the basis of the coexistence of pottery ritual vessels and turquoise tube beads, the author also analyzes the consumption and circulation of turquoise ornaments, one of the luxuries in the Erlitou period.

On the Qijiazhuang jade workshop of the Shang Dynasty at Yinxu

Abstract:The Qijiazhuang jade workshop at Yinxu dated to the late Shang period. The unearthed tools, raw materials and products indicate manufacture of jade and stone artifacts, bone tools and shells tools, as well as mother-of-pearl decorations. The Qijiazhuang cemetery of the late Shang period was located in the same space with the jade workshop, which should have belonged to the jade production lineage. They mainly engaged with the manufacture of jade and stone artifacts, together with bone and shell tools. Political and economic hierarchical differences could be observed within the lineage. The craftsmen could make a living and even obtain significant wealth. The lineage insignia of the Qijiazhuang lineage could reflect their professional characteristic.
