About the Museum

Henan Museum was founded in 1927, one of the earliest museum in China. On May 1, 1998, the newly-built museum was inaugurated. This state-of-the-art national-level museum is now the largest artifact collection, protection, research and exhibition center in central China.

The Museum has a collection of 170,000 pieces (sets) and is particularly famous for prehistoric artifacts, bronzes from Shang and Zhou dynasties, ceramics and jade wares in its collection. Central plain area is a major cradle for Chinese civilization, and the precious and exquisite cultural relics excavated here have witnessed the development trace of Chinese civilization and also demonstrated the historical development of China.

Mission Statement

Henan museum stays committed to the purpose of "develop intrinsic culture, advocate academic research, improve people's knowledge, promote social civilization" and takes efforts to build a service brand of commonweal culture. Henan Museum serves as an important window through which you can have a taste of the culture of central plains and Yellow river, as well as the context of China, meanwhile, it is a vital place to promote core values of socialism and a key platform to advance cultural exchanges and cooperation.

The main tasks of Henan Museum include: implementing national policies, laws and regulations on cultural relics protection; collecting and preserving precious cultural relics in Henan province; studying, preserving, displaying and exhibiting precious cultural and historical relics; authenticating cultural relics in the province; and assisting customs in supervising the exit of cultural relics. It is also responsible for managing the wax seal stamps, exit permits and identification materials of cultural relics.

Departments
  • 1. General Office
    The General Office is responsible for Party building, overall coordination, supervision, secretarial and archive work, and reception. They also coordinate the development of labor unions and other general public’s organizations, as well as model units for cultural progress.
  • 2. Organization and Personnel Department
    The Organization and personnel Department is responsible for department planning, human resource, staff training, and service for the retirees.
  • 3. Logistics Management Department
    The Logistics Department is responsible for sanitation, equipment maintenance, infrastructure, logistic support, management of property, utilities, and etc.
  • 4. Security Department
    The Security Department is responsible for the safety control and public security management of the entire museum.
  • 5. Finance Department
    The Finance Department is responsible for the financial management and the management of special funds.
  • 6. Exhibition Department
    The Exhibition Department is responsible for the planning, organization and implementation of permanent exhibitions, temporary exhibitions at home and overseas exhibitions, as well as for providing support for import exhibitions.
  • 7. Social Education Department
    The Social Education Department is responsible for opening the museum to the public and providing tour guide, social education and other services for visitors.
  • 8. Research Department
    The Research Department is responsible for research on cultural relics, archaeology and museology, the management of scientific research and academic organizations, and the compilation of periodicals such as Cultural Relics of Central China and related materials.
  • 9. Collection Management Department
    The Collection Management Department is responsible for the collection, management, and research of cultural relics in the museum, as well as the management of cultural relics inventories.
  • 10. Library Department
    It is responsible for the collection, management, borrowing and information consultation of all books and materials reference in the museum.
  • 11. Cultural Relics Preservation Research Center
    The Center is responsible for the research on preservation and restoration of cultural relics in the museum, along with the operation and management of Henan Cultural Heritage Preservation Base.
  • 12. Information Management Department
    The Information Management Department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the computer and network system, cultural relics database and multimedia system in exhibition halls, cultural relics image and video shooting, and digital assets management.
  • 13. Henan Cultural Information Center
    The Henan Cultural Information Center is responsible for the publicity and new media platform management of the museum, and news gathering and editing,operations as well as management of the websites of Henan Culture and Henan Museum.
  • 14. Department of Cultural Relics Acquisition and Exchange (Henan Folk Museum)
    Undertake the duties of the former Henan Cultural Relics Exchange Center. Responsible for the identification, acquisition, exchange, exhibition of cultural relics, artworks, folk and intangible cultural heritages, and those which witnessed major events.

  • 15. Cultural Relics Authentication Center (Henan Appraisal Institute for Exit of National Cultural Relics)
    The Center is responsible for the authentication, evaluation and grading of cultural relics in Henan, assisting customs in supervising the exit of cultural relics, and managing wax seal stamps and exit permits for cultural relics.
  • 16. Huaxia Orchestra
    The Huaxia Orchestra is responsible for the research and development of ancient music and musical relics and the performance of ancient Chinese music.
  • 17. Discipline Inspection and Supervision Office
    The Office is responsible for improving Party conduct and upholding integrity and combating corruption across the museum, as well as supervising and inspecting the implementation of various rules and regulations.
  • 18. Office of International Cooperation and Exchange
    The Office is responsible for foreign affairs, international publicity of Chinese culture, and the English translation of the museum’s website, communications for inbound and outbound exhibitions, and the organization, planning and implementation of inbound exhibitions.
  • 19. Social Service Department (Office of Cultural Products)
    The department is responsible for the design, research, development, promotion and sales of cultural products, as well as the cultural products operations and management within the museum.
