About:

Pottery drainpipe

Period: Long Shan culture period, Neolithic Age.
Measurements: 42.5 cm long; outlet: 27.5 cm, and inlet: 34 cm in diameter.
Made from red terracotta clays with sand on the rotating wheel with rope mark.
Provenance: unearthed at the Pingliangtai ruin, Huaiyang county, Henan province in 1980.

The pipe, in a cylindrical form, was made on the rotating wheel, slightly contracted in the central part, mouth diameters on the two ends vary for connecting purpose. Thickness of pipe is around 1.2 cm. It is fully cord marked outside. The pipes, jointed together piece by piece, were uniformly placed with the thinner end of the outside for draining water. Since the urban area is higher than the suburban regions, the whole pipelines are in a slope, easy for draining water, it attested to the advanced public drainage facility of the time at Pingliangtai city.
