Provenance: unearthed at the Neolithic site at Egou, north hillock, Mixian county, Henan province in 1978
   
A clump of clay sculpted as a statue with human facial characteristics, which include a flat skull, protruding forehead, big eyes and nose, chubby cheeks, undefined mouth, with the torso missing. The great majority of the potteries unearthed at this site were made of red clay, only 5 pieces were light gray with fine clay texture, presumably the clay had been washed.
Other examples with various shapes were discovered at the Neolithic sites all over China,  such as Lixian county, Gansu, Bengbu in Anhui, Hemudu of Zhejiang, etc. This artifact indicates that the ancients had mastered the polishing technique, and simultaneously the basic sculptural skills, and three-dimensional modelling skill step by step, as well as being awareness of taking human being as the aesthetic subject by the people of the Neolithic Age, it’s the reflections of the progress in the spiritual world of human being.
