Tang Dynasty

Twisted clay or jiao-tai was a technique that appeared in the Tang dynasty. Porcelain clay of white and brown colors was mixed and molded. Then glaze was applied to the roughcast before it was fired and a wood-like texture revealed on the surface.

Twisted-roughcast pillows usually have a white inside to which mixed clay is pasted. First the roughcast was fired; then after glaze was applied, the ware was fired again. The design on the surface of this pillow are flower cluster patterns common in the Tang dynasty. Archaeological excavations have shown that twisted-clay pillows were mostly produced in Gongyi Kiln.
