Featuring swirling cloud-formed hair divided by a gap in the middle, a pair of roughly rounded openwork bulging eyes, and a straight nose and big nostrils, the mask has a crescent-shaped mouth with a vertical connection between the lips, seemingly for thread. This object is presumably a magical tool used by the sorcerer.

The No. 84 tomb yielded 8 bronze face masks in total, all of them are well preserved, finely cast, and with a unique shape, providing an important reference to the study on the burial custom, secular rites of the ancient Ying State.

Totally, more than 130 burial objects(set) were discovered from the No.84 tomb, of which a couple of bronze wares bear inscriptions, and “Lord of Ying” was identified on few of them, hence the tomb occupant is inferred to be the ruler of the Ying State under the reign of King Gong of Western Zhou dynasty.
