Chinese Spirit in Cultural Products

Not long before, in an audience survey by Phoenix TV about foreigners' impressions of Chinese films, most respondents associated Chinese film with Chinese Kungfu, the Hong Kong underworld, violence, poverty and so on.

Few mentioned modern China, and only one or two knew the director Zhang Yimou.

Beginning in the 1980s, different kinds of Chinese films have been sent abroad, but why are foreigners' impressions still so limited? Does this prove that films only present these aspects rather than the real China? Some in foreign countries don't believe real pictures of modern China, regarding them as fictions. What does that mean? Perhaps it shows that in twenty years' time, we have only exported products, and not the essence of our culture.
