“Classical and Aestheticism------ Simon Foundation Sculpture and Painting Collection” Exhibition was held in Henan Museum on Sept.4, 2012.

This exhibition was jointly held by Simon Foundation, Henan Museum, China Millennium Monument World Art Gallery, Shenzhen Museum and another four domestic museums.

The exhibition had two parts. One was “Classical and Aestheticism”. It showed the artistic exquisite, elegant and pretty of the academic tradition in 19th century. And the other was “Life Dimension”. It appeared the Europe art world from the latter half of the 19th century to 20th century.

About 80 pieces cultural relics were exhibited in Henan Museum this time. Among them, there were 56 statues and 23 pieces of paintings. They were from 19th century to early 20th century. The works covered bronze statues, white marble carvings, paintings and some other west cultural relics.

All the treasures were collected by Mexican Simon privately. And it has received enthusiastic critical acclaim by the local people.

These works gathered European academism, romantism, realism and modern art.

This exhibition had been put on display in many museums successively. Such as, China Millennium Monument World Art Gallery, Shenzhen Museum, Chongqing Museum and so on. The terminal exhibition was in Henan Museum.

The exhibition presented five bright spots.

First, it was a“Bare Exhibition”. All the exhibits showed in the open style. It broke the past visiting model. Thus, the visitors can enjoy the art works directly and get a great art shake.

Second, it was the Originality. It was the first time that the general Europe exhibition from the latter half of the 19th century to 20th century came and showed in Henan province. At the same time, it showed the Europe artistic general view.

Third, the art works had a high visibility and good corporate reputation. All these nice works were created by the outstanding artists along the Europe art history. They were Laighton, Barry, Ryd, Capo, Roddan, Gauguin, Mayor, Renoir and some other famous occidental artists. It is the first time that so many well-known artists’ works were exhibited collectively in Henan.

Fourth, it was widely popularized in the content. The subject matters covered the mythology, femininity, children and so many others. It was in close proximity to the visitors and very easy to enjoy and understand.

Fifth, it had a great ornamental. The sculpture and the painting were on show at the same time. They are embraced the integration. The exhibition reflected a great characteristic and the style of the time. It heightened worth watching too.

It was said that the itinerant exhibition formally started from Sept. 11 to Oct.31, 2012.

Simon

Simon was an ordinary man, but he was very special too. He had a belief that was central to his life. He believed that in this country anything was possible. Crawling across the border of his own beloved country, at risk to his life, he made his way to this country with only the shirt on his back. A tailor by trade, he opened a small business, which supported his wife and children, and which eventually enabled him to purchase even an automobile.

By that time Simon had been in America for over half a century, so he said, "In this country, everything can be changed."

The Simon Foundation is named after this man, to challenge everyone who believes as he did - those who see a wrong and believe it can be made right - and to motivate his descendants.

Something about the Simon Foundation

The Simon Foundation for Continence was founded in 1983 in the United States, followed in 1985 by Simon Canada (now called the Canadian Continence Foundation). The foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization. The mission of the Simon Foundation is to: "Bring the topic of incontinence out into the open, remove the stigma surrounding incontinence, and provide help and hope to people with incontinence, their families and the health professionals who provide their care."

The Foundation's mission is supported by a Governing Board of Directors and an Advisory Board of professionals, many of whom have dedicated their careers to improving the clinical treatment of incontinence and advancing medical science through bladder and bowel research. Financially, the Foundation is sustained through educational grants, corporate contributions, sales of educational materials, and donations from individuals like you.

The Simon Foundation is known throughout the world for its innovative educational projects and tireless efforts on behalf of people with loss of bladder and bowel control. Simon has led the way forward with many groundbreaking projects, for example: the first book written for laypersons, "Managing Incontinence: A Guide to Living with the Loss of Bladder Control"; an educational/support group, "I Will Manage"; the first television movie on incontinence, "The Solution Starts with You"; conferences on little explored, but impactful subjects such as - the first International Conference on Prevention of Incontinence (London, England 1997) and the first International Conference and Town Meeting on Stigma in Healthcare (Chicago 2003); the Defeating Stigma in Healthcare Campaign, and the Innovating for Continence conference series, to name just a few. View our Timeline for a more complete listing of activities and accomplishments.

The Foundation's President and Founder, Cheryle B. Gartley, was the first person with incontinence to speak publicly about loss of bladder control. She has promoted continence with keynote speeches and interviews on prime time television in England, Germany, France, Japan, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and throughout the United States and Canada.

Asian Art at the Simon Museum

This gorgeously illustrated book completes a three-volume series cataloguing the Asian art collection at the Norton Simon Museum. The volume includes approximately 180 religious artworks from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Burma and Laos, as well as Ban Chiang pottery and rain drums. Stone and metal sculptures from Cambodia and Thailand are an area of particular strength in this collection. A substantial introduction to the volume provides pertinent information about the cultural milieu that inspired the creation of these artworks.

Each object is then illustrated and discussed in detail in the catalogue section of the book. Published in association with the Norton Simon Art FoundationPratapaditya Pal is an internationally recognized authority on the art of South and Southeast Asia and the Himalayas. He is Fellow for Research at the Norton Simon Museum, Visiting Curator at the Art Institute of Chicago, and general editor of Marg publications.
