About:

This work is a flat oblong shape, and is carved of green jade with variegated colours at the mouth and right side. It has round eyes, and a protruding nose. The top of its head is decorated with horn-shaped openwork carving and its face features a broad band of decoration.

There is a greater quantity of decorative jade ware from the Western Zhou than from the earlier Shang, as well as a wider variety of types. This is particularly true in the carving of animal subjects, which in the Western Zhou combined carving in the round with bold negative legend incised carving. This jade ox head and horse face have captured the characteristic facial features of these two animals. The emphasis on the carving of the animals noses, eyes and horns fully illustrates the accomplishment and artistic maturity of the Western Zhou craftsmen in their representation of the spirit of these creatures.
