The vessel has a contracted mouth, a bulging belly, from which tapers to the flat base, and sharp contrast in color tones of black and white in terms of the decoration, the bright and succinct lines were orderly drawn. The black dot in the center of the petal was presumably drawn firstly, which was for the purpose of fixing the location of the designs, the dots were linked with the black arched triangles, thereby the white blanks were naturally formed into the the shape of the petals.

As a culture dating to the middle of the Neolithic Age, Yangshao culture(c.5,000-3,000 B.C.), predominantly distributes along the Yellow River valley, with “colored potteries” as its most remarkable trait, thereby it was known as the “colored pottery culture”. The famed archaeologist Su Bingqi holds that the Miaodigou type of Yangshao culture is likely the settlement remains of the people that constitute the cores of the Chinese people, and the colored potteries with flower (pronounced “hua” in Chinese) petal motifs, which is one of the primary traits of the Miaodigou type, and the name of the “Hua (in Chinese)” is probably derived from. In the ancient writing scripts, initially “Hua” etymonologically denoted flower, “Hua (flower)” tribe was also known as “Hua” tribe, that subsequently intermingled with the Xia tribe, thus laying the key foundation for the formation and development of the ethnic Huaxia people.
